Mitsubishi Produces an Electric Car That Wirelessly Charges

The forthcoming Mitsubishi i will not only be the automaker's first all electric car to be mass produced, but also the first ever rechargeable car that can power up wirelessly.

Mitsubishi has partnered with the WiTricity and IHI Corporations in an effort to create wireless charging systems for electric vehicles. The Japanese automaker's overall objective is to eventually make plug-in stations a thing of the past.

"WiTricity and IHI are two major players in the wireless charging and electric infrastructure, and it is hoped they can make it easier for drivers, governments and companies to roll out systems to charge cars without plugging in," according to Totally Motor.1

While you may think the idea is revolutionary, in reality the technology used to wirelessly recharge a car has already been developed. WiTricity recently created and produced a system for the general public that utilizes a patented magnetic resonance system, which can distribute 3.3kW of charging power over a distance of about 2 - 3 inches safely and without difficulty.
